This source helps our understanding of Medieval Japan because it tells us how different people lived. It shows how different people in the class system had different jobs to undertake. As we can see in this source the peasants are carrying massive piles of rice into the compound while the Daymio are seen to be writing and talking. It also indicates that people that were higher in the class system had easier jobs than the people that were lower in the class system. The peasants usually had the hard labour jobs and the Daymio would have the plesant tasks such as writing. Although Japan was quite isolated from the rest of the world at this time we can see some similarities between other medieval countrys, for example the class system was prominent throughout Japan just as it was in other countrys like medieval England. Society was built around it and it was very challenging to change your own place on the class system. The source also shows us how people who had different roles in society and different rankings in the class system wore different clothes. We can see the Daymios wearing brightly coloured kimonos, this contrasts to what the peasants are wearing, they wear dull coloured almost sack like dresses which look very simple. They would have worn different types of clothing to represent their place in the class system, to suit what they did in their everyday lives and because of their finacial status. We see live stock such as horses being used to carry and transport goods in the source. This meant that goods and people were able to get to places they needed to go more efficiently. This encouraged people to trade more around Japan as the service was quicker. This indicates that the technology at the time wasn't very advanced and shows how the worlds technology has progressed through time to change and advance to what it is today. The painting also tells us that the Daymio would have been educated as they knew how to write and read. The would have done this in a lot of their spare time. All the people seen in the painting are males, this tells the audience that Daymios would have been male and that the peasants who did the hard jobs were males while the females would have probably been cooking and doing other tasks that were not has tough.
